Martyrs' Day: Home Minister Amit Shah Unveils Mahatma Gandhi Mural At Sabarmati Riverfront In Ahmedabad

This mural is made by arranging kulhads on an aluminium sheet. It is the second such mural of the father of the nation. The first one is installed at Palika Kendra in Delhi, a KVIC official said.

New Delhi: Union Minister Amit Shah unveiled a mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad today on the occasion of the 74th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day is observed as Martyr’s Day across the nation.

Speaking on the occasion, Shah said, “Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) made us realize the importance of Khadi, but unfortunately, we forgot about it. It's Gujarat's son Narendra Bhai (PM Modi), who revived 'Khadi' by advancing the idea of Khadi.”

The 100 square meter mural is made of 2,975 clay Kulhads (clay cups) made by 75 trained potters from across the country. It is installed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) which had undertaken the project under Kumbhar Sashaktikaran Programme meant for empowering potters.

This mural is made by arranging kulhads on an aluminium sheet. It is the second such mural of the father of the nation. The first one is installed at Palika Kendra in Delhi, a KVIC official told news agency PTI.

The unveiling event was attended by Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Minister of MSME, Narayan Rane, Minister of State for MSME, Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, Chairman KVIC, Vinai Kumar Saxena, and other dignitaries.

The day is observed in the remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of truth and non-violence. On this day, the country observes a two-minute silence for the Mahatma.

Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Bapu was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Gandhi Smriti in Birla House on January 30, 1948. Thence the day is observed as Martyr’s day to honour those who laid their lives for the country.
