Manipur, Meghalaya & Tripura Making Vibrant Contributions: PM Modi Congratulates On 50 Yrs Of Statehood

Expressing happiness over the development in Manipur, Modi said "Development is reaching every corner of Manipur. Not just sports, Manipur youth is doing great work in the field of start-ups."

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday greeted the people of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on their statehood day and praised the states for their "vibrant contributions" to the development of the nation.

"Greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on their Statehood Days. These states are making vibrant contributions to India's development. Praying for their constant progress," Modi tweeted.

Expressing happiness over the development in Manipur, the PM said, "Manipur deserves peace. I am happy to know that they earned it after years of struggle. Development is reaching every corner of Manipur. Not just sports, Manipur youth is doing great work in the field of start-ups,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the statehood day of Manipur."

The minister said all the three states are at the crucial stage of development as the states keep moving forward in the path of development and growth.   

President Ram Nath Kovind also took to wish the states on Twitter, "Greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on Statehood Day. These states, full of natural riches, represent the vibrant culture and unique traditions of our northeast. My best wishes to the citizens of these states for a happy and prosperous future."</p

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also greeted the people of all three states on their Statehood Day. "Heartiest wishes to the people of the beautiful State on 50th Statehood Day," he said in one of his tweets.

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Law and Justice, Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh also wished the people on social media platform Koo, "On the occasion of Statehood Day of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura, I extend my warm greetings to my loving sisters and brothers of these 3 beautiful North-Eastern States. My best wishes for their peaceful and prosperous future."

Around 50 years back, the three states were carved in 1972 with the enactment of the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.

The northeastern states had received the status of full-fledged states after India's Independence and completed 50 years of statehood together on Friday. The princely states of Manipur and Tripura were first merged with India in 1949 and later elevated to the status of Union Territories in 1956. Later they achieved the status of a full-fledged state on January 21, 1972.

Meghalaya was carved out as an autonomous state within Assam in 1970 but achieved full-fledged state status together with Manipur and Tripura on the same day. Shillong was the Assam’s capital in 1874 and remained so till January 1972.
