Two Buses Set On Fire In Manipur After A Warring Community Checks For 'Any Members Of Another Community'

Amid the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, two buses used by security personnel were torched by a mob in the Kangpokpi district. However, no casualties were reported as a result of the incident. A group of people belonging to one of the warring communities stopped the buses at Sapormeina and insisted on checking if anybody from the other community was on board. Later, some of the group members set the buses on fire.
Ethnic violence first erupted in the northeastern state in May following a 'Tribal Solidarity March’. The march was to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. After nearly three months, over 160 have been killed and hundreds have been injured. The Meitei community makes up about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
Meanwhile, a spine-chilling video of two women being paraded naked and groped by a mob has sparked outrage across the country. The video of the May 4 incident surfaced on July 19, on the eve of the monsoon session of Parliament.
The attack on the Manipur issue began with the Opposition bloc questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" on the months-long violence. The Opposition is strongly protesting and highlighting the issue during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. PM Modi spoke up on the Manipur issue for the first time on July 20.
Congress said, the prime minister spoke only for 36 seconds on Manipur, and in that too, he made references to opposition-ruled Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Congress spokesperson Surpiya Shrinate said, “PM Modi's address was for 8 minutes and 25 seconds but he spoke on Manipur for only 36 seconds.”
The Opposition will move a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led Central Government in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. As per a PTI report, Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi will move the motion, said the party's whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore.
Congress party's leader will be moving the motion. We feel that it is our duty to use this last weapon to break the arrogance of the government and make them speak about Manipur, Tagore asserted.
The alliance of 26 opposition parties, INDIA, had decided to move the motion in order to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak in Parliament on the Manipur violence, senior leaders of the front said, reported PTI.
