Maharashtra Rains: Orange Alert Issued In Palghar, Pune, Satara. Death Toll Reaches 99 — Updates

Maharashtra Rain Updates: Four more fatalities in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra took the death toll in the current monsoon season (since June 1) to 99.

New Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange alert for Palghar, Pune, and Satara on Friday. A Yellow alert has been issued in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Kolhapur, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal. This comes as the death toll due to the incessant rains reached 99 after 4 people died in the last 24 hours, as per the Maharashtra Disaster Management department. 181 animals have also died while 7,963 people have been shifted to a safer place.

A total of 14 NDRF teams and 6 SDRF have been deployed due to the rains in Maharashtra, news agency ANI reported citing the state disaster management department. 

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that Mumbai is witnessing moderate rain in the city and suburbs while there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places. "Occasional strong winds with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph very likely," it added.

Earlier, IMD issued a red alert for Maharashtra's Palghar on Thursday as the major rivers of the district - Vaitarna and Tansa were flowing above the danger mark. "IMD has issued a red alert for Palghar. The major rivers of the district - Vaitarna, Tansa are flowing above the danger mark. 35,000 cusecs of water was discharged from Modak Sagar into Vaitarna River yesterday," said Kiran Mahajan, Palghar Resident Deputy Collector, as quoted by ANI.

Tansa lake which supplies water to Mumbai also started overflowing after heavy rainfall. Out of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai, Tansa Lake started overflowing at 8.50 pm. The lake has a total of 38 gates, out of which nine gates have been opened till 9.50 pm, said BMC

Maharashtra Rains: Death Toll At 99

Four more fatalities in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra took the death toll in the current monsoon season (since June 1) to 99. These deaths - all from the Gondia district in eastern Maharashtra - were reported between Wednesday and Thursday evening, said the state disaster management department in a report on Thursday.

Three more persons are missing in the state, it added, as reported by news agency PTI.

The state has received heavy rainfall in almost all parts in the last few days, leading to flooding and waterlogging. The downpour was largely experienced in Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Palghar, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts in the last 24 hours, the department mentioned.

Meanwhile, it was informed that as many as 18 relief camps have been set up in the state for rain-affected people.

Officials of the National Disaster Response Force said that their teams have rescued people from Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts, PTI reported.

However, the number of people evacuated from areas was not officially released.
