16 Students Hospitalised After Consuming Mid-Day Meal At BMC-Run School In Mumbai: Official

Around 9.45 a.m., students in Classes 6 and 7 at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's school in Anik village were fed their mid-day meal.

An official stated that at least 16 pupils from a civic-run school in Mumbai's Govandi neighbourhood were hospitalised on Friday after becoming unwell from suspected food poisoning, news agency PTI reported. Around 9.45 a.m., students in Classes 6 and 7 at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's school in Anik village were fed their mid-day meal. After half an hour, several of them complained of stomach aches, he claimed.

"Nine boys and seven girls were admitted to the BMC's Shatabdi Hospital. They are undergoing treatment and their condition is stable," he was quoted by PTI in its report.

According to the official, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration gathered samples of the noon meal and submitted them to a forensic laboratory.

In a similar incident in August, as many as 70 pupils were ill after ingesting mid-day meals at a government school in New Delhi. Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya School Durgapark, Sagarpur, reported the incident. After consuming soya milk during the mid-day meal, pupils' health began to deteriorate. Following that, they were rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

What Is Food Poisoning?

Consuming contaminated food or water is the most common cause of food poisoning. Bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli), viruses (e.g., Norovirus, Hepatitis A), parasites, or poisons can all cause it.  It's important to note that food poisoning is generally caused by eating contaminated food.

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are the most frequent symptoms of food poisoning.

The majority of food poisoning is caused by one of three principal agents: bacteria, parasites, or viruses. These infections can be found on practically all foods consumed by humans. Heat from cooking, on the other hand, normally eliminates microorganisms on food before it reaches our plate. Because raw foods do not go through the cooking process, they are typical causes of food illness.
