Kolkata Doctor Death: FORDA Resumes Strike Day After Vandalism At RG Kar Hospital

Federation of Resident Doctors' Association had previously called off its strike on August 13 after a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda.

Unidentified miscreants entered the premises of the facility and vandalised parts of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday where the doctor was found dead last week.

Kolkata Doctor Death: In view of the recent incident of vandalism at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 14, the the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) has decided to resume its strike again. Earlier, the Doctors' Association had called off the strike following a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda on August 13.

The peaceful protest march on Wednesday night turned violent shortly after midnight after unidentified miscreants entered the premises of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They vandalised the hospital premises, which is being seen as a part of alarger consipracy to destory the evidence. At least 15 policemen were also injured in the incident. 

In a press release issued on August 15, FORDA stated: "The events that have unfolded since, particularly the violence last night, have shocked and anguished us all. This represents a dark chapter for our profession."

"As an association, we reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with our fellow resident doctors," it said.

Acknowledging ist earlier decision to call off the strike, FORDA said that the decision was made in good faith on the basis of the assurances from the Health Ministry. However, it added that this decision only "caused distress and disappointment within our community".

"We accept responsibility for this and understand the widespread discontent it has caused," the statement further noted.   

FORDA also condemned the inability of the state government and Centre to fulfil the commitments made by them to ensure safety of healthcare professionals.

"We strongly condemn the Union Ministry and State Government for their failure to honor their commitments and ensure the safety of healtheare professionals during this crisis. Given the gravity of recent developments and the overwhelming call for justice, we have decided to resume the strike, effective immediately," it said.

FORDA is working with the stakeholders and Resident Doctors' Associations (RDAs) to develop a strategic plan of action.

"The events of the past few days have reinforced our commitment to our rights, our dignity, and the future of our profession. This is a pivotal moment. We must stand firm, united, and resolute in our struggle for justice and the respect we deserve," the Doctors' Association stated in its press release.
