Kerala: Pregnant Woman, Husband Burnt To Death After Car Catches Fire Near Kannur Hospital

The fatalities have been named as Prijith (35) and his wife Reesha (26), both from the area of Kuttiattoor.

A pregnant lady and her husband were burnt to death on Thursday when the automobile in which they were travelling caught fire near the district government hospital, according to authorities, news agency PTI reported.

The fatalities have been named as Prijith (35) and his wife Reesha (26), both from the area of Kuttiattoor.

According to them, the accident occurred when the automobile was driving to the hospital with Reesha, who was complaining of labour pains.

Fire and rescue authorities came to the scene immediately after receiving the information, quenched the fire entirely, and dragged Prijith and Reesha out, but they were already dead.

Six individuals were in the automobile, and four of them, including a toddler in the back seat, escaped when the vehicle caught fire.

The victims' co-passengers have been taken to a hospital, they said.

Speaking with reporters after visiting the accident site, Kannur city police Commissioner Ajit Kumar stated: "They are not injured. They are in the hospital and they are getting checked," PTI reported.

According to him, the victims became stuck inside the blazing car—a 2020 model Maruti S-Presso—because they were unable to unlock its front door.

According to witnesses, the lady who died was pregnant, and they attempted to save the pair by opening the front door of the automobile but were unable.

Locals on the scene were seen sprinting towards the blazing automobile to save the unfortunate couple who had become trapped inside it.

"We were totally helpless at that time as the front side of the car was immediately engulfed in fire. We could not do much to save them as we feared that the oil tank of the car will explode at any time," an eyewitness informed reporters.

The causes of the fire could only be determined after being verified by technical specialists.

"The car will be properly examined with the help of experts. Let us investigate a little more and then we will be able to get a clear picture," police was quoted by PTI in its report.
