Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal government has issued an advertisement stating that 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles will no longer be able to run in Delhi.
New Delhi: Bad news for millions of petrol and diesel vehicle owners in Delhi-NCR as 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles will no longer be able to run here.
Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi has issued an order as per which old cars are being banned. The government has banned the vehicles citing orders from the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal(the NGT).
Old vehicles won't run
According to the Supreme Court order, 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles have been banned. Apart from this, the owners of such vehicles have been advised to scrap the vehicles of this category. The NGT order has also been mentioned in this.
Vehicle may be seized
If someone does not obey the order, the vehicle may be confiscated. This is considered to be an important step towards a scrappage policy. Under this policy, old and unfit vehicles have to be removed from the roads. Hence personal vehicles will require automated fitness tests after 20 years and commercial vehicles after 15 years. Driving vehicles that do not pass this test can attract heavy penalties.
Scrappage policy
According to the new scrappage policy of the central government, fitness tests of vehicles will be required. These rules will not apply to new vehicles. These rules will apply only to old vehicles. In addition, a 15-year-old vehicle must have a fitness certificate. Fitness centers will be opened across the country for this purpose. The vehicle that passes the fitness test will have to be reregistered.
