J&K: Search Ops Continue After Police Recover Abandoned Bag Full Of Explosives At Railway Station

In the abandoned bag near a taxi stand at the Jammu and Kashmir railway station, police recovered 18 detonators, some wires and 500 grams of wax-paper material packed into boxes.

New Delhi: Search operations by Government Railway Police & Railway Protection Force continued on Friday after a bag full of explosive materials was found by the police near a taxi stand at the Jammu and Kashmir railway station.

On Thursday, the police rushed to the spot and took possession of the bag, which contained 18 detonators, some wires, and 500 grams of wax-paper material packed into boxes. Shortly after the incident, the dog squad and bomb disposal team also reached the site.

The police apparently foiled a plan to possibly trigger an IED blast, as they were alerted after an abandoned bag was found in a 'nallah' (drain) near the taxi stand, according to news agency PTI.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Railways) Arif Rishu said, "We recovered a bag near the taxi stand at Jammu Railway Station. Explosive materials packed in 2 boxes were found in the bag. 18 detonators and some wires were recovered. Around 500gm of wax-type material was packed in the box. Materials have been seized", news agency ANI reported.

SSP Arif Rishu told reporters, "We are investigating it (whether it was a fabricated IED). There is no powder-like material, only a wax-type material. It was not a ready IED as detonators were in a separate box."

He added that there could have been a possible untoward incident but it was foiled.

"Had they been able to execute it fully, there could have been an untoward incident but we foiled that as we are alert," the official mentioned. According him, there was no specific input related to the recovery of the explosive material.

In the wake of the festive season, security has been tightened, cameras were installed and checking and frisking were intensified. Some people were trying to trigger an act of sabotage but the alertness of the security forces prevented their designs, Rishu said.

He informed that the police have registered an FIR into the matter and initiated an investigation.
