Rahul Gandhi Hathras Visit: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will visit Uttar Pradesh's Hathras where a stampede at a 'satsang' on July 2 killed 123 people. Gandhi will meet the families of victims killed in the stampede, said Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal on Thursday.
"The incident in Hathras is sad. Rahul Gandhi will soon visit Hathras and meet the victim's family," Venugopal said.
Meanwhile, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also visited Hathras on Wednesday. He interacted with the injured persons in the hospital and took first-hand information about the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The Uttar Pradesh government has also set up a three-member Judicial Inquiry Commission under the chairmanship of retired Justice Brijesh Kumar Srivastava (II) of Allahabad High Court to investigate the Hathras stampede.
A notification in this regard was issued by Governor Anandiben Patel late on Wednesday night. Retired IAS officer Hemant Rao and retired IPS officer Bhavesh Kumar Singh have been appointed as members of the inquiry commission. The headquarters of the commission will be located in Lucknow.
The commission is tasked with completing its investigation within two months from the date of the notification.
The noose has started tightening around godman Bhole Baba, aka Narayan Saakar Hari, whose religious discourse on Tuesday culminated in a devastating tragedy.
Though Bhole Baba’s name does not figure in the initial FIR filed in connection with the incident, the police have cordoned off his ashram in Mainpuri, following reports that the godman could be hiding in his palatial abode.
"We have found the location of his mobile phone to be near his ashram and we are keeping a close watch," said a senior police official.
