Mahatma Gandhi's name exists as a permanent imprint not only in India but all over the world. On January 13, 1948, he began a fast unto death in Calcutta to maintain Hindu-Muslim unity and against communal turmoil. It was the last fast of his life. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, exactly 11 days after ending his fast on January 18, 1948.
Three days before his assassination, Gandhiji had visited the Qutubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki Dargah in Mehrauli to bring peace to Delhi. At that time Delhi was burning in communal violence. Before leaving the dargah, Gandhiji had given the message of communal harmony and unity while addressing a large gathering of people.
