Mahatma Gandhi was a political ethicist, patriot, and lawyer who was also known as the Father of the Nation, Bapu, or Mahatma. His birth anniversary is almost around the corner, and the day is celebrated with great zeal all around the world. The day is also observed globally as the International Day of Nonviolence.
Mahatma Gandhi devoted his life to national liberation and fought for the path of peace, truth, and nonviolence. Scroll down to find out when we commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, its history, importance, and anything else you need to know about the Father of the Nation's birth day.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2. It falls on Monday this year and commemorates Mahatma Gandhi's 154th birthday.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. Lal Bahadur Shastri, another Indian leader and statesman, shares Gandhi's birthday. Mahatma Gandhi, a lawyer whose life was transformed by his experiences in South Africa, was the most influential figure in India's independence campaign.
Gandhi successfully led various Satyagraha and Ahimsa protests to liberate India from British colonial tyranny. He committed his life to the fight for liberty. His nonviolent attitude and ability to win people over with love and compassion had a significant effect on the Indian civil rights struggle. Nathuram Godse killed him on January 30, 1948.
To recognise Gandhi's teachings, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 2 as International Day of Nonviolence in 2007. The day, according to the UN, is an opportunity to "disseminate the message of nonviolence, including through education and public awareness." It reiterates "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" as well as the need "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence" .
