Former Union Minister Mukul Roy Still In Critical Condition, Says Hospital Official

Former Railway Minister Mukul Roy remains in critical condition after the brain surgery due to a fall. He is in the ICU at Appollo Hospitals, Kolkata, and is being monitored around the clock.

Former Railway Minister Mukul Roy, who underwent brain surgery after suffering an injury due to a fall at his home in Kolkata, continues to be in a critical condition. He was admitted to Appollo Hospitals on July 3 and is still in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, an official said.

"Roy's health condition is critical but stable. Our doctors are monitoring him round the clock," an official told news agency PTI. The former railway minister was taken off the ventilator on Friday and was kept on oxygen support in the neuro ICU department

Doctors said that after the fall, he suffered a brain haemorrhage, resulting in a blood clot. He underwent brain surgery on Thursday afternoon. In medical terms, this is called a subdural hematoma. This condition occurs when a blood clot forms under the lining of the skull and ruptures a blood vessel in the brain.

The surgery took place on Thursday under the supervision of SN Singh, Head of the Neurosurgery department at Apollo Hospitals, Kolkata, reported ABP Ananda.

BJP MP Soumitra Khan went to meet him at the hospital on Thursday afternoon. Khan said, "I entered politics holding Mukul Roy's hand. He, too, is still a BJP MLA."

Mukul Roy was once one of the most important personalities in Bengal politics. Roy is a founding member of the Trinamool Congress. He joined the BJP in 2017 and won the Krishnanagar Uttar assembly seat in the 2021 elections. He, however, returned to the TMC that year.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh on Friday went to the hospital to check on Mukul Roy's condition. He said it was heart-wrenching to see the TMC heavyweight in that condition. "Subhranshu [Mukul Roy's son] tried to wake him up, but he did not respond," Ghosh said. "I went to see Mukul Roy [at] Apollo ICU. It felt bad. [He is] Out of ventilation today. But the brain is still. He is lying with his eyes closed," Kunal Ghosh said.
