WATCH: Women Seeking Recruitment In Mumbai's Fire Brigade Clash With Police
Many women who applied for firefighter positions protested when their applications were rejected because they were too short. As they clashed with the police, the protest quickly turned violent.
A large group of women seeking recruitment in Mumbai's Dahisar fire brigade gathered outside its premises and clashed with the Mumbai Police on Saturday. The Mumbai Police eventually had to resort to the 'lathi charge' in the end to try to stop the clash. The gates of the premises were closed to not let any protestor take the violence inside the campus.
News agency ANI tweeted a short video of the clash between the civilians and the police.

In the approximate 30 seconds video, women in large numbers were seen standing outside the Mumbai Fire Brigade's premises. Some of them were seen at the front clashing with the Mumbai Police while a few others from the back joined them soon after. The police in order to bring the violence under control resorted to the 'lathi charge' and started hitting the protestors.
Allegedly, during the recruitment drive for women in the Dahisar fire brigade, the reason for the protest is believed to be many young women applicants who didn't meet the height standards were turned down. The women alleged that despite them being higher than the minimum height requirement of the Municipal Corporation, they were still eliminated from the recruiting process.
Chief Officer of the Mumbai fire brigade while talking to the media about this said that the women who came late to the recruitment were protesting as the process began at 8 am, and they showed up at around 10 p.m. He said, "3318 women candidates, who were qualified as per height criteria were chosen for the further selection process. Protesting women are those who came late. We can’t allow people who reached around 10 am when the time was 8 am."
