Delhi: 5 Dead, 9 Injured After Godown Wall Collapses In Alipur

The warehouse, the wall of which collapsed, was under construction when the incident took place, as per reports. 

New Delhi: At least five people died and nine others were injured after a wall of an under-construction godown collapsed in outer Delhi’s Alipur area on Friday, news agency ANI reported. According to police, the injured persons have been sent to hospital and out of nine, two are said to be critical.

As per the ANI report, rescue operation is underway as some more people are feared trapped and debris are being cleared, Delhi Police said.

The warehouse, the wall of which collapsed, was under construction when the incident took place, as per reports. 

Police said a PCR call was received at Alipur police station at 12:40 pm about the collapse.

"On reaching the spot, it was found that approximately 100-feet-long and 15-feet-high wall of the under-construction warehouse has collapsed. Around 20 labourers who were digging a foundation adjacent to the wall got buried under the debris," news agency PTI quoted a senior police officer as saying.

According to officials, four fire tenders were rushed to the spot for the rescue operations and added that the area of the godown is about 5,000 square yard.

The land owner has been identified as Shakti Singh, (40), a resident of Bakoli in the Alipur area, and the contractor is Sikandar, police said, adding that legal action will be initiated in the matter.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he was monitoring the relief work following the wall collapse. 

"A very tragic incident happened in Alipur. The district administration is involved in relief and rescue work. I am monitoring the relief work. I pray for the souls of the deceased," Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences for those who lost their lives. "Anguished by the mishap in Alipur, Delhi. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest," read a tweet by the PMO.    

Earlier, on Wednesday, a shop owner in Pune was booked over charges of negligence after a 55-year-old worker died due to wall collapse in the shop, as per reports.
