Cyclone Asani | Rain Lashes Andhra Pradesh. Severe Storm Weakens, To Turn Into Depression: IMD

In the wake of the inconvenience caused by the cyclone, the Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh postponed the exams scheduled for May 11 to May 25.

New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh is experiencing heavy to very heavy rains owing to the cyclone Asani. On Wednesday morning, the sea turned turbulent in Kakinada as strong winds blew over the west-central Bay of Bengal.

The cyclonic storm Asani over the west-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and weakened over the past six hours, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) this morning. As per the IMD update, it is very likely to move northwestwards for the next few hours and reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening.

“It's very likely to move nearly northwestwards for next few hours & reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal close to Andhra Pradesh coast,” IMD said adding, “Thereafter, it's very likely to recurve slowly north-northeastwards, move along Machilipatnam, Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada, Tuni & Visakhapatnam coasts.”

The met department further added that after reaching the Andhra Pradesh coast by this evening, the cyclone will move northeastwards and then will gradually into a depression by Thursday morning.

It will “emerge into the west-central Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coasts by today evening. Then it is likely to move northeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to weaken gradually into a depression by the 12th of May morning,” IMD said.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh is lashed with heavy to very heavy rains which are obstructing the traffic movement in parts of the region.

On Wednesday morning, the Traffic movement on Kakinada - Uppada Beach Road was closed in wake of the cyclone. The state police told news agency ANI that “Pitch road is damaged, we put up 2 check-posts in our limits to control vehicular movement. Roads are getting damaged. We're stopping everybody from taking this route.”

In the wake of the inconvenience caused by the cyclone, the Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh postponed the exams scheduled for May 11 to May 25. As the cyclone is expected to subside by May 12, the exam schedule from then onwards remains unchanged.
