COVID-19 Outbreak: 1,233 New Positive Cases In Maharashtra; Delhi Records Over 400 Fresh Cases

A total of 49,391 Covid-19 positive cases have been recorded in India. While 1,694 people lost their lives, more than 14,182 people have recovered from the disease and been sent back home.

New Delhi: Despite the third phase of lockdown, the total number of cases in India continues to rise with country now crossing  the 49,000 mark. So far a total of 49,391 Covid-19 positive cases have been recorded in India. While 1,694 people lost their lives, more than 14,182 people have recovered from the disease and been sent back home.

Till date, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi continue to be worst-hit states in the Country. According to the latest updates by  State Health Department, Maharashtra recorded 34 deaths and 1233 new COVID-19 positive cases on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 16,758; death toll stands at 651.

Witnessing the worsening situation, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan expressed concern over the pandemic. In a video conference held with Maharashtra ministers today afternoon, Vardhan briefed the officials stating that the situation in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Solapur was more worrying and fortunately Gadchiroli and Wardha have remained unaffected.

Speaking of Delhi, the national capital has seen not much of a respite in terms of coronavirus cases. The state recorded over 400 fresh cases of COVID-19 on May 6. On a whole, Delhi has recorded 5,532 coronavirus cases. 1,542 people have recovered and 65 succumbed to the deadly disease.

Meanwhile, in an official statement Delhi Health Ministry announced that one more area was removed from the list of containment zones in Delhi. According to the government, East Delhi's Gali Number 9 of Pandav Nagar, which was sealed on April 2, has been de-contained.

"No new addition in containment zone on Wednesday. So far, 13 areas have been de-contained and now the active containment zones in the city are 87," the official statement said.

The deadly coronavirus had made first appearance in Wuhan city of China in December. The highly contagious virus took no time to spread across the world and became a global pandemic. The novel disease had reached India in January with first case being detected on January 30  in Kerala.
