'Had Congress Acted Swiftly In 2016...' MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi Reacts After Being Expelled For Cross-Voting

This development takes place as the Haryana Congress has alleged that Bishnoi, an MLA from Hisar’s Adampur constituency, did not vote for the party’s candidate Ajay Maken.

New Delhi: The Congress, which lost the Rajya Sabha election in Haryana due to cross-voting, has expelled its MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi from all party positions, news agency PTI reported. “The Congress president has expelled Kuldeep Bishnoi from all his present party positions, including the post of special invitee of the Congress Working Committee, with immediate effect,” the news agency quoted AICC general secretary K C Venugopal as saying in a statement.

Reacting to the development, the expelled Congress MLA took to micro-blogging site Twitter and said that Congress has rules for some leaders and exceptions for others. "Had @incindia acted this swiftly & strongly in 2016 & on every other critical opportunity they’ve missed, they wouldn’t have been in such dire straits," Bishnoi tweeted.

"Congress also has rules for some leaders and exceptions for others. Rules are applied selectively. Indiscipline has been repeatedly ignored in the past. In my case, I listened to my soul & acted on my morals," he wrote.

The development took place as the Haryana Congress has alleged that Bishnoi, an MLA from Hisar’s Adampur constituency, did not vote for the party’s candidate Ajay Maken.

The Haryana Congress, according to the news agency, has alleged that Bishnoi cross-voted in favour of independent candidate Kartikeya Sharma, who was supported by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) combine.

The Congress, which had 31 MLA, needed as many votes to win the Rajya Sabha seat from Haryana.

One of the grand old party’s legislators, however, cross-voted and another’s vote was cancelled.

The expelled Congress MLA, who did not attend any of the party meetings of its legislators, had said that he has voted as per his conscience.

Maken, who lost to Sharma in a closely fought contest, had earlier said that action should be taken against Bishnoi.

“We were ahead of independent candidate in preference 1 result. We objected that 1 vote which was given to independent should be cancelled. But our vote was cancelled and their rejected vote was accepted. We are getting this examined legally,” news agency ANI quoted Maken as saying.
