Chhattisgarh Elections: Congress gets support of female voters; wins most of the female-dominated seats

Of the 90 assembly seats, 22 were female dominated and Congress marked victory in 19 of such constituencies.

New Delhi: In the Chhattisgarh assembly elections 2018, Congress has been successful in establishing its grip over female voters, as is evident from the Election Commission data which showed that most of the assembly constituencies in the state where women voters outnumbered men have been won by the Congress. Of the 90 assembly seats, 22 were female dominated and Congress marked victory in 19 of such constituencies. However, among the newly-elected MLAs from these 22 seats, only three are women- Lakshmi Dhruv from Sihawa seat, Chhanni Chandu Sahu from Khujji and Anila Bhendia from Dondilohara. Former Chhattisgarh CM Ajit Jogi emerged victorious on the Marwahi seat which has 93,542 women voters as against 90,323 male voters. The female-dominated seats from where Congress won are Pathalgaon, Dharmajaigarh, Khallari, Kawardha, Mahasamund, Sihawa, Khujji, Mohla-Manpur, Kanker, Bhanupratappur, Keshkal, Narayanpur, Chitrakot, Jagdalpur, Bastar, Konta, Bijapur, Kondagaon and Dondilohara. Barring three seats of Marwahi, Bindrawangarh and Dantewada, the rest were won by Congress. Bindrawangarh and Dantewada seats went to the BJP. Chhattisgarh election results witnessed an end to 15-year-long BJP rule. The Congress, which was out of power for 15 years staged a stunning comeback on , courtesy, a key promise to waive off bank loans to millions of farmers who were reeling under steep debts. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bit the dust in its bastion as it refused to honour its commitment to help out farmers in a state which is categorised the rice bowl of the country.
