BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje takes on Mamata; says "Welcome to Islamic Republic of West Bengal"

Karandlaje’s statement came as an aftermath of an incident, where a boy named Shovan Mandal got allegedly ‘beaten up’ for saying ‘Jai Sri Ram’ by his headmaster and was ‘not allowed to wear tilak and sacred thread’.

New Delhi: Just hours ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to West Bengal, Bharatiya Janta Party’s Karnataka MP Shobha Karandlaje made to headlines for taking a jibe at Mamata government on July 14, calling the state “Islamic Republic of West Bengal”. Karandlaje’s statement came as an aftermath of an incident, where a boy named Shovan Mandal got allegedly ‘beaten up’ for saying ‘Jai Sri Ram’ by his headmaster and was ‘not allowed to wear tilak and sacred thread’. Speaking on the incident, the MP said, “Welcome to Islamic Republic of West Bengal!! Shovan Mandal didn't know that saying 'Jai Sri Ram' among his friends would get him beaten badly by his headmaster. Not only this, was also warned him not to wear sacred thread and tilak”. In a similar incident, opposition pointed several fingers even at Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his statement we he allegedly said that “Congress is a Muslim Party”. Following Gandhi’s statement opposition took several jibes on him and accused the party of being anti-Hindu party. Clarifying Rahul’s statement, Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday said, “Rahul’s statement is being misunderstood. When he said that he is Muslim’s party, he meant Congress is the party of minorities”.
