Bihar: Heavy Rains Disrupt Normal Life, Stranded People Rescued By JCB In Patna

On Saturday, the heavy downpour in Patna caused traffic jam and water-logging in several parts of the city. The commuters on two-wheeler vehicles were seen wading through knee-deep waters.

New Delhi: Intense rainfall has been lashing the state of Bihar since past one week, throwing life totally out of gear in the state, with the capital city Patna being the worst affected. All the civic facilities including the roads, rail , traffic  healthcare facilities, schools, even offices and markets have been disturbed in many districts of the state. A red alert has been issued in 14 districts of Bihar after five persons were reportedly killed in Gaya after heavy rains lashed the town. In many parts of Patna, JCB machines were deployed to rescue people. Many girls were stranded inside a girls' hostel located in Rajendra Nagar area. They were later recused by SDRF help by deploying a JCB machine. On Saturday, the heavy downpour in Patna  caused traffic jam and water-logging in several parts of the city. The commuters on two-wheeler vehicles were seen wading through knee-deep waters. Pedestrians were also stranded for hours due to water clogged roads and bridges. Many market areas and stores in low lying areas were inundated with water. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city will receive moderate rainfall accompanied by a thunderstorm for the next two days. The temperature in the city will oscillate between 25 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius. The humidity would be around 93 per cent. In view of the flood-like situation in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday ordered all the district collectors to continue monitoring the situation and relief measures till October 15. The Chief Minister held a meeting via video conference to take stock of the situation. Officials informed the Chief Minister about the camps and the measures that are being carried out to provide relief to the affected people and the operations being undertaken by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. Through the video conference, the Chief Minister took stock of situation in the districts including Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur and Munger. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the city is likely to receive light rain with thunderstorm for the next week. (additional inputs from agencies)
