In a bid to reshape the political narrative leading up to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Congress party, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, is set to kick off the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Manipur on Sunday. The yatra aims to shed light on pressing issues such as unemployment, rising prices, and social justice, while traversing through 100 Lok Sabha segments across 15 states.
The Congress party asserts that the initiative is not merely an electoral campaign but a platform to voice people's concerns, accusing the government of stifling their voices in Parliament. The yatra is framed as an attempt to reinstate the foundational principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity embedded in the Constitution.
Despite the party's insistence on the non-electoral nature of the yatra, its timing is crucial as the Congress seeks to revive its electoral prospects following a lackluster performance in recent assembly elections. The party aims to counterbalance the BJP's focus on the upcoming Ram temple consecration ceremony with a spotlight on issues directly affecting the common citizen.
Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, expressed concern about the misuse of emotional issues for political gains. He called on the youth to contemplate whether the identity of India should be defined by quality of life or emotions, employed youth or provocative slogans, and love or hate.
The yatra, spanning 6,713 km, will predominantly use buses but will also incorporate stretches on foot. It is scheduled to cover 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats, and 337 assembly segments in 67 days, concluding in Mumbai on March 20 or 21.
The choice of Manipur as the starting point is significant, given the state's recent turmoil marked by ethnic violence since May last year, claiming over 180 lives. The decision to commence the yatra from Thoubal district, rather than Imphal, was made due to conditional approval from the state government, which restricted the number of participants.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other top leaders will be present in Thoubal to flag off the yatra. The journey will take the party through politically crucial regions, including Uttar Pradesh, covering 1,074 km in 11 days, and West Bengal for five days, encompassing 523 km and seven districts.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, emphasized the transformative impact of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, drawing parallels with the earlier Bharat Jodo Yatra that covered 4,000 km and contributed to the party's success in assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Rahul Gandhi is expected to address gatherings and engage with civil society members and organizations twice a day during the yatra. The Congress has also extended an invitation to leaders of the Indian National Inclusive Developmental Alliance (INDIA) bloc to join the yatra at any point along its route.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, focusing on the injustices of the past decade, is symbolized by the Nyay anthem with the tagline "Saho Mat, Daro Mat" (do not suffer, do not be scared). The anthem, featuring protesting women wrestlers and glimpses from Gandhi's previous Bharat Jodo Yatra, has been shared across the party's social media platforms.
As the Congress sets out on this extensive journey, its success in shifting public sentiment and addressing grassroots concerns remains to be seen.
