'Being Hindu A Crime In Bengal': BJP Slams Mamata Govt After Video Of Assault On Sadhus Goes Viral

A video of the incident, in which three sadhus from Uttar Pradesh were allegedly seen being disrobed and thrashed by a crowd while on their way to the Gangasagar Mela surfaced on Friday.

A political uproar has erupted when a crowd reportedly undressed and abused a number of sadhus (seers) in West Bengal's Purulia district. A video of the incident, in which three sadhus from Uttar Pradesh were allegedly seen being disrobed and thrashed by a crowd while on their way to the Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal, surfaced on Friday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and compared the attack to the Palghar mob lynching.

Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief, posted the video on his official X account and said that goons associated to the ruling TMC were behind the assault on Sadhus. “Absolutely shocking incident reported from Purulia in West Bengal… Sadhus travelling to Gangasagar for Makar Sankranti were stripped and beaten by criminals affiliated with the ruling TMC.” Malviya stated.

Asserting that being a Hindu in West Bengal was a crime, he stated: “In Mamata Banerjee’s regime, a terrorist like Shahjahan Sheikh gets state protection and sadhus are being lynched."

On alleged assault on sadhus in West Bengal, Shri Ram Janambhoomi Teerth Kshetra chief priest, Acharya Satyendra Das said: ..."Someone had given the name Mumtaz Khan to Mamata Banerjee. Attacks have happened on processions on Ram Navami and other religious processions. She (Mamata Banerjee) gets angry when she sees the 'Bhagwa' colour and this is why she makes these attacks happen...These incidents of attacks are highly condemnable."

Slamming TMC over the alleged assault on sadhus, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said: "The law and order situation has crumbled in West Bengal. The funds meant for the welfare of public are being misappropriated. Why does the West Bengal government provide shelter to those who embezzle public funds? Is CM Mamata Banerjee not holding her ministers accountable?"

Sukanta Majumdar, head of the BJP's West Bengal branch, strongly condemned the attack and the administration of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Shocking incident from Purulia; Sadhus en route to Gangasagar were stripped and beaten by criminals linked to TMC, echoing the Palghar tragedy. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, a terrorist like Shahjahan gets state protection while sadhus face violence. Being Hindu is a crime in WB," he said.

Shehzad Poonawalla, national spokesperson for the BJP, compared the event to the mob attack on the ED and said that West Bengal's law and order framework had crumbled.

“Palghar part 2 in Purulia? Sadhus en route to Gangasagar were stripped and beaten by TMC goons. In West Bengal under TMC, Shahjahan gets protection while sadhus face violence. Being Hindu is a crime? Political violence has been institutionalised by TMC. From central agencies to sadhus – no one is safe! Law & order has collapsed," Poonawalla wrote in a post on X.

Cops Say 'Miscommunication Due To Langauge Barrier'

On a viral video showing a group of sadhus being assaulted by a mob in the Purulia district, Purulia SP, Avijit Banerjee stated: "Three saints were going in a vehicle...Near Gourangdih, three girls were heading to a local Kali mandir for pooja when the car stopped near them and the Sadhus asked them something. Due to some language issues, some misunderstandings happened and the girls thought that the Sadhus were following them...The local public came and took the Sadhus near Durga Mandir and vandalised their car. The Sadhus were also manhandled...The Police provided the Sadhus with all possible assistance...A case has been initiated on the complaint by a Sadhu. 12 people have been arrested so far and an investigation is underway."
