'PoK Wouldn't Have Existed If...': HM Amit Shah Cites Nehru's Quote On 'Mistakes' In J-K — WATCH

While discussing the bills, Shah read out a quote by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru where he took responsibility for the issue of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday tabled the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Rajya Sabha.

While discussing the bills, Shah read out a quote by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru where he took responsibility for the issue of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Shah said that if there had been no untimely ceasefire in Kashmir, there would have been no PoK.

"One thing is known by everyone, had there not been an untimely ceasefire, there wouldn't have been Pak-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) today...I would like to read out a statement...This is the quote by Jawaharlal Nehru. Unko toh manoge ya nahi manoge ki unhone galti ki. Accept this," Shah said in Rajya Sabha.

Citing the source of the quote, Shah stated, "Swayam Nehru keh rahein hain ki meri galati hain."

On abrogation of Article 370, Shah said, "Former PM Jawaharlal Nehru was seeing (accession of) Jammu and Kashmir (after Independence) and he left it incomplete. So many regions of the country that seemed difficult than J&K joined India but why was Article 370 brought for Kashmir."

He went on to add that "if anybody in the future asks who is responsible for the decision to abrogate Article 370, I would like to say me and Narendra Modi government are responsible for the decision."

Opposition Stages Walkout From RS

Opposition leaders staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha during Amit Shah's reply on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill.

Congress MP Rajiv Shukla said, "Opposition MPs walked out because when there was a discussion going on J&K's issue, he (Amit Shah) constantly kept saying 'Ghamandiya gathbandhan'... Our LoP stood up and asked him to speak on Kashmir's issue, and why he had so many issues with the INDIA alliance."

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha passed both bills granting reservations to the Kashmiri Pandit migrants and displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

Both the bills -- the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 -- were passed by the Lok Sabha on December 6.
