Amit Shah Breaks Silence On Parliament Security Breach, Says 'Opposition Playing Politics'

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the security lapse in the Parliament is a serious issue but the Opposition is "playing politics" over the matter.

New Delhi: Amid Opposition demand over a statement on the security breach at Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah finally broke his silence on the issue on Thursday. The minister slammed the Opposition saying they are “playing politics” over the matter, reported India Today.

Speaking at Agenda AajTak 2023 session, Amit Shah said, “This is a serious incident. Opposition is playing politics over this. Of course, there has been a lapse. But everybody knows Parliament security is under Speaker and the Speaker wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs. We have formed an enquiry committee and that report will be sent to Speaker soon.”

"There should not be loopholes, but our responsibility is to fill those gaps. My appeal is not to make this a political issue,” he added.

The Union Minister also assured that the panel has been tasked with probing the matter and also see how the security in Parliament can be stepped up.

Amit Shah’s remarks came hours after Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urging him to allow a discussion on the matter under Rule 267, PTI reported.

Terming the security lapse a “grave matter”, Kharge urged Dhankhar to not take up any other business in the House and keep the proceedings limited to allow a discussion on the issue.

“In view of the gravity of the matter, myself in consultation with floor leaders of INDIA Parties in Parliament have come to a considered view that the matter is of such a critical importance that it needs to be raised under Rule 267 of the Rules and Procedure of Council of States (Rajya Sabha). Further, till the Minister of Home Affairs makes a statement on this matter followed by a discussion under Rule 267, there is no occasion for taking up any other business in the House or even for any meeting with a view to 'sort out this matter' in any other manner. I trust that your good self will appreciate the situation,” the Congress President wrote in his letter.
