Independence Day 2019: As India celebrates its 73rd Independence Day today, the search engine Google, dedicated a creative doodle representing the spirit of India. Today's Doodle was created by Copenhagen-based artist Shaivalini Kumar. It depicts the traditional Indian motifs and monuments. It portrays a 'patchwork' of traditional motifs ranging from education, to the arts, to courage and compassion.
These little ‘patches’ have various symbols like the national animal tiger, the plume of our national bird peacock, and a space satellite orbiting the universe that depicts the feat of ISRO. There is also a pride flag that celebrates India’s momentous decision of decriminalizing homosexuality.
India is the world’s second most populous country with as many as 1.3 billion citizens celebrating Independence Day today. On this day in 1947 one of the world’s oldest and most ethnically diverse civilizations became a sovereign nation, free from British rule. While the subcontinent marks the occasion in various ways—from patriotic kite-flying to Amritsar’s “beating retreat” ceremony—no site is more historically significant than Lahori Gate at the Red Fort in Delhi, where the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation.
The India’s tricolor flag could be seen flying proudly today everywhere in the country. As the flag is raised each year, a 21-gun salute rings out, accompanied by the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana.” Parades, awards, and cultural events complete the momentous occasion.
