Former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta Appointed As NIA Chief

Dinkar Gupta is a 1987-batch IPS officer, who enjoyed the proximity to Cong during UPA 1-2, first in Intelligence Bureau in Delhi & then as DGP Punjab.

New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Dinkar Gupta on Thursday has been appointed as the Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), a Personnel Ministry order said, as reported by news agency ANI. Dinkar is a 1987-batch IPS officer, who enjoyed the proximity to Cong during UPA 1-2, first in Intelligence Bureau in Delhi & then as DGP Punjab.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Gupta's appointment as the Director-General, NIA till March 31, 2024, that is the date of his retirement," read a new order. 

Director-General of CRPF Kuldiep Singh was given additional charge of the NIA in May last year after the retirement of Y C Modi.

As per an authority request gave by the Personnel Ministry, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared the name of Gupta for the top NIA post.

Having a Master's degree in police administration, Gupta has stood firm on the foothold of Director General of Punjab Police in 2019 and served at the post for quite a long time and seven months. He was moved as Chairman of Punjab Police Housing Board as he had looked for consent for a central deputation.

He has likewise held the post of Director General of Police, Intelligence, Punjab, which included the immediate oversight of Punjab State Intelligence Wing, State Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU).

An accomplished and separated official, Gupta prior had an eight-year stint on central deputation from June 2004 to July 2012 during which he held sensitive tasks including as the top of the Intelligence Bureau unit which cared for the security of VVIPs.

Gupta was decorated with two police gallantry medals in 1992 and 1994. He was additionally adorned with the Police Medal for Meritorious Services by the President and the Presidents Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2010).

In 1999, Gupta was granted the British Chevening Gurukul Scholarship by the British Council at London School of Economics, London.

In another order, Swagat Das was designated Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Home Ministry. 

Das, a 1987-batch IPS official of the Chhattisgarh unit, is as of now Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.

“Das has been appointed to the post till November 30, 2024, that is the date of his superannuation," the order said.
