Delhi Records 3,194 Fresh Covid Cases, Positivity Rate Jumps To 4.59%

New Delhi: The national capital on Sunday logged 3,194 fresh Covid infections, the highest one-day rise since May 20, and one death, while the positivity rate rose to 4.59%, according to the data shared by the city's health department.
Sunday's count of Covid cases in Delhi was 17% higher than the tally on Saturday when the city clocked 2,716 cases.
Delhi had reported 3,231 cases on May 20 last year with a positivity rate of 5.50%. However, as many as 233 fatalities were recorded on that day.
According to official data, on Friday and Thursday, Delhi reported 1,796 and 1,313 cases with a positivity rate of 1.73% and 2.44% respectively. The daily case tally on Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday were 923, 496 and 331, respectively.
Under the Graded Response Action Plan approved by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), if the positivity rate is over five per cent for two consecutive days, a 'Red' alert can be issued leading to a 'total curfew', halting most of the economic activities.
The massive surge in fresh Covid cases over the last few days in Delhi is being recorded amid a significant spike in cases of the new Omicron strain in the national capital.
Meanwhile, the toll due to coronavirus in Delhi rose to 25,109, and the number of cumulative cases on Sunday stood at 14,54,121 as over 14.19 lakh patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours.
A total of 69,650 tests -- 59,897 RT-PCR tests -- were conducted the previous day, according to the daily health bulletin.
Nine Covid-related deaths were reported in the city last December, and seven in November, according to the official data. Delhi had recorded four Covid deaths in October and five in September.
