PM Modi To Address Conference Of Law Ministers Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the inaugural session of the All India Conference of Law Minister and Law Secretaries via a video message on Saturday. The two-day conference is being hosted by the Ministry of Law and Justice in Gujarat, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.
The objective is to provide a common forum for policy makers to discuss issues relating to the Indian legal and judicial system. States and Union territories will be able to share their best practices, exchange new ideas and improve their mutual cooperation through the conference. Law ministers and secretaries from states and Union territories will attend the event.
PM Modi To Chair CSIR Society Meeting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also chair a meeting of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Society here on Saturday. Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh said this is the third year of the CSIR Society and the meeting is of special significance as it marks 80 years of the establishment of the council.
About the agenda of the meeting, Singh said a presentation about the various activities of the CSIR would be made before PM Modi and his suggestions would be sought on the way forward. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, 13 union secretaries, including all secretaries of science-based ministries, would participate in the meeting.
Supreme Court To Hear Maharashtra's Plea Against Saibaba's Acquittal
The Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear on Saturday Maharashtra's plea for a stay on the Bombay High Court order acquitting GN Saibaba, after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's persistent pitch that the acquittal was not on merit but for want of appropriate sanction to prosecute him under the anti-terror law UAPA, PTI reported.
Arguing against the release of wheelchair-bound Saibaba, incarcerated in the Nagpur Central Jail, Mehta said the offence committed by him were "against the nation".
Mehta's assertions notwithstanding, the apex court bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli was unyielding and told told him that the court cannot stay Saibaba's acquittal as the parties are not before it.
