Parliament Winter Session Begins Today
The Winter Session of Parliament will begin on December 7 and will last until December 29. The border situation with China, the alleged misuse of government agencies, price rise and unemployment are likely to dominate the proceedings of the winter session of Parliament.
The opposition will seek to corner the government on several issues and a confrontation is likely on the demand for discussions on Chinese "incursions" at the border and alleged misuse of agencies.
Ahead of the session, leaders from more than 30 parties attended a meeting convened by the central government to discuss the legislative agenda and the issues likely to be taken up during the session.
The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister and deputy leader of Lok Sabha Rajnath Singh, was to seek cooperation from all parties for the smooth functioning of Parliament.
During the meeting, the Congress and the Trinamool Congress raised the issue of alleged misuse of investigating agencies, which was backed by the Aam Aadmi Party, Nationalist Congress Party and several other parties.
The demand for building a consensus on the women's reservation bill was also raised by JDU, DMK, SAD during the business advisory committee meeting of Lok Sabha.
Chinese President Xi To Visit Saudi Arabia On Wednesday
Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a three day-official visit to Saudi Arabia starting Wednesday during which he will attend the China-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting. While there is no official announcement here about his visit, Saudi state media reported on Tuesday that President Xi will arrive in the Gulf Kingdom on Wednesday for a three-day visit to the world's largest oil producer.
The visit will include a bilateral summit chaired by Saudi King Salman and attended by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler, according to the Saudi state media reports.
Xi will also attend a summit with rulers from the six-member GCC and talks convening leaders from elsewhere in the Middle East, the report said.
The GCC is a regional, intergovernmental, political, and economic union comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Sri Lanka Lifts COVID-19 Restrictions For Overseas Travellers
Sri Lanka on Wednesday decided to discontinue the COVID-19 vaccination certificate for travellers entering the island nation. Travellers to Sri Lanka would be free of mandatory COVID-19 restrictions with the lifting of a circular issued in 2021, Asela Gunawardena, the Director General of Health Services said. Accordingly, the mandatory requirement of producing the COVID-19 vaccination certificate to enter the country would be no longer needed with effect from Wednesday.
