Godhra Train Burning Case: SC To Hear Pleas Of Gujarat Govt, Convicts
A number of people who were convicted in the Godhra train burning case in 2002 and are currently serving life sentences will present bail requests to the Supreme Court on Monday.
Along with the bail applications, a bench composed of Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, Justices P. S. Narasimha, and J. B. Pardiwala is scheduled to hear a number of the convicts' pleas challenging their convictions.
The highest court stated on March 24 that the convicts' bail applications would be decided at the next hearing.
It had observed the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, showing up for the Gujarat government, that he needs to confirm specific authentic subtleties with respect to certain convicts.
However, the top court had extended one of the convicts' bail on the grounds that his wife was ill with cancer. Mehta had supported the medical reasons for extending bail.
Prior on March 17, the top court had said it will hear on March 24 the appeal of the Gujarat government and the bail pleas of of several accused in the case.
The state government informed the highest court on February 20 that it would be seeking the death penalty for 11 convicts whose sentences in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were reduced by the Gujarat High Court to life in prison.
Delhi High Court To Hear Sharjeel Imam's Plea For Bail In Sedition Case
A bail application filed by JNU student Sharjeel Imam in connection with a case involving allegations of sedition related to the 2020 riots will be heard by the Delhi High Court on Monday.
A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Talwant Singh is scheduled to hear the case, which challenges the trial court's January 24, 2022 decision to deny Imam's bail application.
On January 30, the court had sought about the city police's stand regarding whether Imam's request for bail could be remanded to the trial court for consideration because the lower court's order rejecting the relief did not mention any grounds.
The bench had stated that the trial court's bail rejection order would need to be examined in light of the other sections drafted against Imam because section 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code had been suspended in accordance with the Supreme Court's orders.
Last year, the preliminary court had outlined charges against Imam under sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity), l53B (imputations prejudicial to national integration), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC and section 13 (punishment for unlawful activities) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
