646 Doctors Die Due To Raging Second Wave Of Covid, Delhi Registers Highest Fatalities

Delhi stood atop the doctor's martyr list with 109 fatalities while states like Punjab and Kerala record three and five deaths respectively

According to the Indian Medical Association (IMA), 646 doctors succumbed due to Covid-19 in the second wave so far. With Delhi posting the highest deaths of doctors with 109 while Uttarakhand, Punjab and Kerala see the least number of deaths in doctors.

Meanwhile, states like Bihar recorded 97 deaths, while Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra recorded 79, 43, and 23 fatalities respectively. Besides Kerala, Karnataka also has been on lesser doctor fatalities recorded nine deaths.

According to the IMA's data, 748 doctors died due to COVID-19 during the first wave that hit the country last year. States like Kerala have been on the lesser side of the doctor fatalities as the state gave the highest priority for healthcare in the recent budget. 

Meanwhile, India's daily caseload is on a declining trend as on Saturday, there have been 11,835 lesser cases recorded than the previous day. India's active caseload further declined to 15,55,248 and the recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases for 23 straight days. Also, the average positivity rate has further dipped to 5.78 per cent.

Amid exhausting hours of work and risks taken to save Covid patients, people attacking doctors is another issue. Recently, in Assam, a doctor was booted by patients kin after the Covid patient died. On Saturday, a delegation of Indian Medical Association of Assam state branch met CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the increasing violence against doctors in the state. IMA put forward nine suggestion to control the violence against doctors.
