Sleepyheads Rejoice: 'Festival Of Laziness' Pays Rs 90,000 For Longest Nap!

Participants are tasked with reclining on mattresses, with minimal movement permitted, including sitting or standing, to vie for the coveted title.

For those who relish the art of slumbering to the point where alarm clocks become futile, an unusual event is currently capturing attention – the 'Festival of Laziness,' offering a cash reward for indulging in your favourite pastime. Held in the Brezna village of Montenegro, Eastern Europe, this peculiar festival promises a cash prize of €1,000, equivalent to approximately Rs 90,000, to the 'laziest citizen' who can spend extended periods in repose.

Participants are tasked with reclining on mattresses, with minimal movement permitted, including sitting or standing, to vie for the coveted title.

According to an AFP report, this contest has been a longstanding tradition, spanning over 12 years, with the intention of challenging the stereotype that Montenegrins are inherently lazy.

Competitors are allowed certain privileges during the event, including reading books, using mobile phones, and even receiving visitors – all while remaining in bed. They are permitted a mere 15-minute respite every eight hours. The report notes that participants' health is closely monitored to ensure their well-being.

Dubbed the 'Lazy Olympics,' this competition primarily draws participants from Montenegro, though individuals from countries such as Russia and Serbia also take part.

The event takes place in a barn-like structure at a resort, where contestants recline with drawn curtains. The room is permeated with the aroma of meals and used blankets. Participants receive three meals daily and are closely supervised, with any instance of sitting or standing resulting in immediate disqualification.

Initially motivated by the monetary reward, many contestants now remain to test their endurance and ability to challenge themselves, according to the report. The festival commenced on August 21 this year and has evolved into an unconventional platform for pushing personal limits.
