Today, people from all corners of the globe celebrate the International Day of Yoga, a special occasion dedicated to the ancient practice that originated in India. With its roots deeply embedded in physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, yoga has become a universal phenomenon practiced in various forms around the world. The United Nations, recognising the immense benefits of yoga, declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, marking a significant milestone for this revered discipline.
The word "yoga" derives from Sanskrit and signifies the union of body and consciousness, reflecting the core principles of this age-old practice. Its holistic approach to health and well-being has captivated millions of individuals worldwide, making it an ideal candidate for a globally recognized day.
On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution 69/131, proposed by India and endorsed by a record-breaking 175 member states, officially designating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a pivotal role in initiating the proposal during his address at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly. He suggested June 21 as the date for this international celebration, as it coincides with the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, which marks the longest day of the year. This date holds a special significance in many parts of the world, emphasizing the unity and universality of yoga.
Since its inception, the International Day of Yoga has been observed annually on June 21. Its primary objective is to raise global awareness about the numerous advantages of practicing yoga.
