Know The Relation Between Intoxication And Reproductive Health

Intoxication from alcohol, smoke, or illicit substances has been demonstrated to have a major impact on a reproductive health for both men and women

Understanding the complex relationship between intoxication and reproductive health is critical in our quest to assist couples in realizing their parental dreams. Intoxication from alcohol, smoke, or illicit substances has been demonstrated to have a major impact on a woman's fertility, according to scientific research.

Impact On Female Reproductive Health:

Dr. Arati Adhe Rojekar, who is a Consultant - Gynaecology, at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mahim, Mumbai said, "Firstly, medical intoxication means the condition that affects your senses, brain, ability to think or judge after the use of certain substances. Mainly in India, or around our world it's been seen alcohol, smoking and certain chemicals which are addicting."

"With the use of intoxicating substances there is also increased contractility of certain organs like fallopian tubes and uterus leading to infertility and if a pregnant lady consumes it, it may lead to miscarriages. Certain substances also affect the release of main hormones like FSH and LH from the brain. The routine hormonal release is affected hence it can also affect ovulation/egg release such as irregular or delayed ovulation to anovulation. There are certain agents causing narrowing or contracting blood vessels. The effect on blood vessels leads to less blood oxygen and nutrient supply to the foetus hence leading to congenitally malformed babies," she added.

Talking in regards to IVF, Dr. Nishi Singh, who is the Head of Fertility at Prime IVF said, "First and foremost, drinking alcohol can cause a woman to create fewer viable eggs. Her ovarian reserve is depleted as a result, making spontaneous conception more difficult. Additionally, drinking can mess with hormone balance and the menstrual cycle, which further lowers pregnancy rates. For those seeking assistance through IVF, intoxication remains a pivotal factor. It can lower the chances of a successful IVF cycle. Intoxication may reduce the quality of eggs retrieved, impair embryo development, and even hinder implantation in the uterus."

Impact On Male Reproductive Health:

In this regard, Dr. Arati said that along with their hazardous effects seen on lungs, blood vessels and heart the oxidation radicals produced are detrimental to the gametes like sperm and eggs, which directly causes damage to the genetic material and reduces the fertility potential.

Dr Hansaji Yogendra, who is the Director of The Yoga Institute listed down how intoxications impacts male reproductive health:

Reduced Sperm Production:

Excessive alcohol consumption can disrupt the hormonal balance in men, leading to decreased sperm production. This can result in reduced fertility, making it more difficult for couples to conceive.

Lower Sperm Quality:

Intoxication can also affect the quality of sperm. Alcohol can lead to DNA damage in sperm cells, reducing their ability to successfully fertilize an egg.

Erectile Dysfunction:

Alcohol impairs blood flow and nervous system function, which can lead to erectile dysfunction in men. This can make it challenging to engage in sexual activity and can contribute to fertility issues.
