Govardhan Puja 2021 Date: Govardhan Puja is marked by worshipping rear cattle. It is also known as ‘Annakoot’. The worship of Govardhan is associated with Lord Krishna.

This act of Lord Krishna protected the residents of Gokul and broke Indra's ego. Since then, the tradition of celebrating this festival has continued.

In the Dwapar era, the residents of Braj worshipped Lord Indra out of fear by offering him fifty-six delicacies. Lord Krishna asked the people of Braj not to worship Indra but to worship their cattle and the Govardhan mountain.

In the process, Lord Krishna himself consumed the offering meant for Lord Indra. Enraged by the incident, Lord Indra wreaked havoc in the form of heavy rains. In order to protect, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger and protected the entire Braj region.

Following this incident, Lord Indra bowed down to Lord Krishna and the whole village celebrated. Since then, on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, Lord Krishna is worshipped by making Govardhan mountain using cow dung.

As a matter of fact, Lord Krishna started the Govardhan Puja, not for the purpose of getting worshipped but to end the egoistic misconduct by Lord Indra.

This signifies that ego can be prevalent in anyone, whether good or evil. Therefore, this festival teaches us to give up our ego, love nature, and serve and help others.

According to scriptures whoever does darshan of Giriraj Ji Maharaj and circles around the Govardhan mountain gets a thousand times more virtue than doing many other pilgrimages.

In Maharashtra, this day is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padhwa. It is believed that on this day Vamana, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, defeated Bali and sent him to Patal Lok. Bali comes to the earth on this day as an embodiment of Lord Vamana.
