Cauvery Water Sharing Row: Karnataka To Approach Supreme Court, File Petition Before CWRC, Says CM Siddaramaiah

As the all-party meeting was ongoing in Karnataka, DMK said that the neighbouring state does not have any authority to deny water to Tamil Nadu.

After an all-party meeting, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said the state would approach the Supreme Court and file a petition before the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) in connection with the water-sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu. Reiterating that Karnataka is not in a position to release water, the CM said that they are mulling discussing the issue with their MPs before the Special Parliament session.

On the Cauvery water-sharing issue, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said, “As the state is facing a severe rain deficit, we are not in a position to release water to Tamil Nadu as per the Supreme Court order. We will approach the Supreme Court and also file a petition before the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.”

We are thinking of calling our MPs to discuss this issue before Parliament special session, he said.

As the all-party meeting was ongoing in Karnataka, DMK said that the neighbouring state does not have any authority to deny water to Tamil Nadu.

DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, "Internationally, any river, water shouldn't be denied to the lower state or areas, that's the international convention accepted everywhere.”

“We are not asking for the entire water...we only want to share water as per the agreement and it is the duty of the Cauvery Water Management Authority to ensure that water is divided amongst various states like Puducherry, Tamil Nadu based on the availability of water. They have to agree they can't deny it...They have no authority to do that," he said.
