Workers protest privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], Apr. 05 (ANI): The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) held a protest march, in opposition to the privatisation of Government assets.

Carrying banners and flags, the workers of the steel plant walked around 25 kilometres, protesting the move.

At least 5000 contracted workers and employees participated in the march, demanding that the government should allocate its own mines for plant and also that it shouldn't be selling the steel plant shares to private companies, shouting slogans against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government and the privatisation move.

According to media reports, Ch Narasinga Rao, president of the VSP's trade union and CITU state president, said that the claims made by BJP president Amit Shah about the Centre spending INR 35,000 crore on the VSP was a sham, claiming that the actual amount allocated was just INR 3,600 crore.

In another clarification statement, he said that the centre had approved the expansion plans for the plant; however it failed to allot funds for the same. (ANI)
