All nations must abide by the 'law of the sea', says Ram Madhav in UNCLOS

Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar) [India], Oct 7 (ANI): In the backdrop of China increasingly asserting its claim over the South China Sea, the National General Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ram Madhav on Thursday said all nations must abide by the law of the sea.

"Just as constitution of land must be understood by citizens in order for it to be better implemented, law of seas also must be understood by people -at least that the law exists to guide behavior of countries on these seas also," Madhav said at a conference on 'United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea' (UNCLOS), in Port Blair.

UNCLOS, organized by India Foundation, sets out the legal framework for all activities carried out in the oceans, which includes conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and their resources.

Diplomats from Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, and Germany also attended the three-day conference that kick-started on October 5. (ANI)
