New Delhi: Director Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan-I' has become the highest first-week grosser in Tamil Nadu. The film, which has got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, has collected more than Rs 300 crore at the box office worldwide.
Featuring a star-studded cast of Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the Tamil historical drama hit theatres globally on September 30.
Mani Ratnam’s banner Madras Talkies took to Twitter to share the box office figures and its performance in Tamil Nadu.
The production house posted a motion poster that stated that the film has earned over Rs 300 crore worldwide gross with the caption, “Success beyond boundaries! Thank you for this tremendous response.”
The post was about its tremendous performance in Tamil Nadu. It was captioned as, "Entering 2nd week in style! Smashing records - reaching heights."
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan recently watched the film and had a lot of praise for the Mani Ratnam’s directorial. While addressing the media after special screening he said, "I believe the feeling of astonishment that I got while watching this film would have been experienced by all Tamil fans who have watched this film. There is a dialogue about a golden era that appears at the beginning of this film and it comes in my voice. I would like to recall it here. I get the feeling that the golden era of Tamil cinema has begun. As an artiste and a producer of Tamil cinema, it makes me proud."
Actors Vikram and Karthi, who played the roles of Aditha Karikalan and Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan in the film thanked Kamal for his heartfelt praise for the film
Based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 historical fiction novel, "Ponniyin Selvan-I" chronicles the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman (played by Jayam Ravi), a powerful king of the south who went on to become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
Ponniyin Selvan is a five-part novel and Mani Ratnam’s first part of the movie is based on a chronological account of the most important events that take place in the first three parts of the novel.
