New Delhi: The trailer of Kajol’s debut OTT series ‘The Trial – Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka’ was released on Monday. Directed by Suparn S Varma, the series is an Indian adaptation of the popular American legal TV drama 'The Good Wife'.
The trailer shows Kajol as Noyonika Sengupta, a housewife, who returns to work as a lawyer after her husband, who is a judge, goes behind the bar. The trailer opens with Noyonika’s husband, additional judge Rajeev Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta), getting arrested for accepting sexual favours as a bribe. Shocked by her husband’s cheating, she is seen slapping him before he is taken to jail. Noyonika then returns to work as a lawyer to get back on her feet and take charge of her family. When her husband’s lawyer quits his case, he comes to his wife and asks her to fight his case.

Shedding light on her character, Kajol said, "The complexities are what defines a character to me and the layers surrounding Noyonika are what spoke to me when this role first came over. Noyonika felt personal, I instantly felt protective about her and that reaffirmed my faith in choosing 'The Trial - Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka'.
"Suparn Varma has built a world where vulnerability of characters meets the cruel situations posed by life. The audience will feel one with Noyonika, as she makes difficult choices, because I did."
Opening up about the camaraderie on the sets, Kajol said: "We had an absolute great time on set. Suparn was like our gang leader. He just made sure that we were all comfortable around each other as far the dialogues and other aspects were concerned."
"I think everybody was pretty much a veteran on set, everybody worked on many films before this, have done a lot of work, been in the industry for years. So, it was really comfortable, easy and good fun. I do love legal drama but I didn't really go into detail and exact legalities of things."
She added: "You know some laws are very common in the Indian system and we all know about it. However, I do have a vague understanding of what is allowed and what isn't. We had a lawyer on set to help us through the process."
The series also has an ensemble cast of Sheeba Chaddha, Jisshu Sengupta, Alyy Khan, Kubbra Sait and Gaurav Pandey in pivotal roles.
The series will stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
