Vicky Kaushal's 'Uri' was shown in a temporary open-air theatre in Churachandpur on Tuesday, marking the return of cinema to the conflict-torn state of Manipur after more than 20 years.

New Delhi: A Bollywood film about surgical strikes against Pakistan was shown in a temporary open-air theatre in Churachandpur on Tuesday, marking the return of cinema to the conflict-torn state of Manipur after more than 20 years.

The Rengkai (Lamka) screening of the Vicky Kaushal-starrer — 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' saw a decent attendance.

Aditya Dhar, a debutante, wrote and directed the 2019 Indian military action movie 'Uri: The Surgical Strike', which Ronnie Screwvala and RSVP Movies produced. The movie, which features Vicky Kaushal, Yami Gautam, Mohit Raina, Kirti Kulhari, and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles, is a fictionalised account of the actual event of the response to the 2016 Uri attack. It tells the tale of Major Vihaan Shergill of the Para (Special Forces), who played a significant role in the events.

When it was released on January 11, 2019, it received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, who praised the cast performances, the narrative, the action scenes, the sound design, the director, and the technical aspects. It also won numerous awards, including four National Film Awards.

The movie was screened by the Hmar Students' Association (HSA) on Tuesday. The national anthem was played at the outdoor theatre, which was located 63 kilometres from the capital city before the film started. Altogether, four Hindi movies will be screened including, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'.

Since May 3, there have been numerous clashes between the Kukis and the Meiteis in Manipur, resulting in the deaths of more than 160 persons. The HSA in a statement earlier said the organisation would publicly screen a Hindi movie on Tuesday to mark the country’s 77th Independence Day celebrations.
