Suriya-Bobby Deol's 'Kanguva' Surprises As It Joins Oscars 2025 Contenders 'All We Imagine As Light' And 'Girls Will Be Girls'
Kanguva was one of the most highly anticipated Indian films of 2024. However, the epic fantasy action film failed to live up to expectations and ended up being a box-office disaster.
Kanguva was one of the most highly anticipated Indian films of 2024. The excitement was palpable, especially given the star-studded cast, with Tamil superstar Suriya playing a dual role, Bollywood actress Disha Patani as his leading lady, and Bobby Deol making his Tamil debut as the antagonist. After Bobby's intense performance against Ranbir Kapoor in Animal (2023), fans had high hopes for him.
However, the epic fantasy action film failed to live up to expectations and ended up being a box-office disaster, grossing only a third of its production budget. So, it came as a surprise when Kanguva was reportedly named a top contender for the 2025 Oscars.

Kanguva makes it to Oscars 2025
Just a month after its release and disappointing box-office results, Kanguva hit OTT platforms. Despite its massive budget of ₹300-350 crore, the film only managed to earn ₹106 crore, ultimately proving to be a flop. Now, it is reportedly competing against films like Shuchi Talati’s Girls Will Be Girls (2024) and Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed All We Imagine as Light (2024), which has already garnered two nominations at the Golden Globes 2025.
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 323 feature films have been deemed eligible for the 97th Academy Awards, with 207 of them qualifying for the Best Picture category. Six Indian films are included in this list: Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi), and Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi-English). While some fans are thrilled, many netizens are questioning how Kanguva, a box-office flop, managed to make it onto this prestigious list.
