New Delhi: As Kannada superstar Yash celebrated his birthday on January 8, the makers of his forthcoming flick ‘Toxic’ surprised fans with a teaser trailer, showcasing Yash in a suave avatar. However, another name that grabbed attention was Geetu Mohandas, the director of 'Toxic'. Let’s get to know more about her.
Who is Geetu Mohandas?
Geetu Mohandas is a brilliant filmmaker and actor. Geetu, whose name is Gayathri Mohandas, was born on February 14, 1981, in Kannur, Kerala, and started her career in film when she was a youngster. At the age of five, she co-starred with Mohanlal in the film, ‘Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare’ (1986), and she took the name Geetu for the role. As a result of her outstanding performance, she was named Best Child Artist at the Kerala State Film Awards.

Working with Mohanlal in ‘Life is Beautiful’ (2000) marked the beginning of Geetu's adult acting career. She has been a popular Malayalam cinema actress for many years, appearing in hits like ‘Thenkasi Pattanam’, ‘Valkannadi’ and ‘Akale’, for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Malayalam. Following her last performing role in ‘Nammal Thammil’ (2009), Geetu moved into filmmaking.
Geetu Mohandas’ Career in Filmmaking
In 2009, Geetu debuted as a filmmaker with her short film Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening?). The film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and went on to win three international awards for Best Short Fiction. Additionally, it was a nominee for a National Film Award and was featured in the 2014 Kerala state curriculum for students in their last year of high school.
Featuring Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Geetu's first feature film Liar's Dice (2013) received extensive praise from critics. As India's official submission for the 87th Academy Awards, the film took home two National Film Awards—one for Best Cinematography and one for Best Actress—and was chosen to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Geetu won the Global Filmmaker Award at the Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film, 'Moothon' (The Elder One), which dealt with issues of love and identity.
About 'Toxic'
Geetu Mohandas is now prepared to unveil her newest film, ‘Toxic’, which has Yash as the titular character. After the enormous success of ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, Yash's long-awaited comeback to the big screen is finally here with this film. ‘Toxic’ has garnered a lot of attention because of Geetu's distinctive narrative approach and Yash's indisputable star power. The film is reportedly releasing later this year.
