New Delhi: Veteran actor Smriti Biswas has passed away. The Bengali actor who made a mark in the Hindi film industry and worked with veterans liek Guru Dutt, Mrinal Sen and V Shantaram, died at her residence in Maharashtra's Nashik city on Thursday, PTI reported.

Smriti, 100, died late on Wednesday night following age-related issues. A noted yesteryear star, she was living in a one-room-kitchen rented flat in Nashik Road area.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta took to his official Instagram to confirm her death and wrote a condolence message that said, “Go away in peace and to a happier place, dear Smritiji. Thank you for blessing our lives. RIP Smriti Biswas.”

Smriti Biswas, born Smritirekha Biswas began her career as a child artist. She found her calling as an actor who worked with legends and became a seasoned actor herself.

Smriti Biswas worked with filmmakers like Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, Raj Kapoor and BR Chopra.

Smriti also acted with legends like Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Balraj Sahni in various films. She made her  debut with the Bengali film 'Sandhya'( 1930). 'Model Girl'( 1960) was her last Hindi film. Smriti Biswas quit acting after marrying filmmaker SD Narang.

Smriti Biswas has also worked in several Hindi, Marathi and Bengali movies. She began her career at the age of 10 in the Bengali film 'Sandhya', and went on to act in more Kolkata-produced films including Hemant Bose' 'Dwanda' and Mrinal Sen's 'Neel Akasher Neechey'.

Smriti Biswas celebrated her 100th birthday on February 17, 2024. She is survived by two sons-Rajeev and Satyajeet, a PTI report said.

Smriti Biswas had quit acting on the behest of her filmmaker husband who has said that he needed a 'wife and not an actress.' In an interview with Quint, several years ago, she shared, "My husband wanted a mother to be there for his children. So I accepted. And in my house on the third floor, we had a huge set – one for shooting scenes and the other for dances. Hema Malini, Rekha, Helen, Reena Roy, Rajesh Khanna and Sunil Dutt would come there so often. So I hardly missed the industry.”
