Shahid Kapoor Says He Was Raised By 'Single Mother': I Get Upset When People Think Dad Helped Me In Bollywood

Shahid Kapoor stated that he prefers to keep some details private, such as what it was like to grow up with his mother Neliima Azeem after she split from his father, Pankaj Kapur.

New Delhi:In a recent interview, actor Shahid Kapoor stated that he prefers to keep some details private, such as what it was like to grow up with his mother Neliima Azeem after she split from his father, Pankaj Kapur. Shahid Kapoor has always been cautious about disclosing too much about his youth and his personal life.

Shahid said that Neliima was a "single mother" who raised him and his half-brother Ishaan Khatter alone in an interview with Bollywood Bubble. Neliima was married to Pankaj Kapur from 1979 to 1984. From 1990 to 2001, she was married to Rajesh Khattar. Shahid was questioned about his mother's pride in him, as well as how he started supporting the family at a young age.

He said, “It’s sweet of her. Mothers are like that, they’ll always say the best things about their children. She’s a single parent, and me and Ishaan are brought up by her. We can never repay what parents do for us. She’s always been so positive and so loving, she’s always been a trooper for me and Ishaan… I don’t like to talk about those things, she’s saying it as a matter of pride, but those are very private things. I don’t think everything needs to be shared. Jitna hai woh hai, she’s there for me, we’re all there for each other, it’s no big deal.”

The actor, however, admitted being bothered when people used to think of him as a product of nepotism, when he began his career in the industry.

Talking about it, Shahid said, "I’m one of those self-made guys who people think, because his papa was an actor, got it easier. And I get very upset about that, because I’m like, ‘Hey, guys, you don’t know my struggle’. Just because my father is Pankaj Kapur doesn’t mean I had it easy, because actually I didn’t even live with him, I lived with my mom. And he’s also a very proud man, he would never (offer to call someone on my behalf). And I was too proud to ask him for any support ever. In fact, I never even brought it up with him, neither did he ask me. It just never came up."

Shahid Kapoor will next be seen in Bloody Daddy that releases on Jio Cinema on June 9. The actor made his digital debut with the web-series 'Farzi', this year.
