New Delhi: Kiran Rao's upcoming directorial venture 'Laapata Ladies' is all set for release and the filmmaker is busy promoting it in full swing. During one of her interviews, Kiran also joined the bandwagon of critics who did not appreciate Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Animal.' The film that became one of the biggest blockbusters of 2023, received a lot of criticism for promoting misogyny and violence. In response to Kiran's criticism, Vanga suggested that instead of his film, she should consider the body of work done by her ex-husband, Aamir Khan. Rao gave her opinions on Vanga's remarks and refuted any criticism of his film in an interview with The Quint.
Rao talked candidly about her disapproval of the misogynistic attitude in Hindi film, pointing out that she has publicly denounced Bollywood clichés like heroes pursuing heroines. She said, "I have never commented on Mr Sandeep's films because I have never seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen. I have talked about it on various platforms at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not about the specific film. Why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film you'll have to ask him. I have never seen his film."
Regarding Vanga's statement that Aamir sang misogynistic songs in the past, she clarified that Aamir was among the few who had issued an apology for the song "Khambe jaisi khadi hai" that Mr. Vanga had mentioned. Rao additionally stated, "There are very few people who would look back at their body of work and apologise for doing something problematic in retrospect." She also added, "If Mr. Reddy has something to say to Aamir, he should tell him man to man. I am not responsible for Aamir's work or Aamir Khan."
Kiran Rao's directorial venture 'Laapata Ladies' is all set to release in theatres on March 1.
