Alia Bhatt Credits Pankaj Tripathi For Teaching Bihari Dialect In 'Udta Punjab', Says 'He Was My Mentor For One Month'

Alia Bhatt credited acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi as her mentor during the one-month preparation of the 2016 film ‘Udta Punjab’.

New Delhi: Actress Alia Bhatt is busy promoting her upcoming film Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala. In the film, Alia plays a courageous sister who would do anything to protect her brother, played by Vedang Raina. She recently discussed her role-prep process in an interview, using her critically praised 2016 crime drama ‘Udta Punjab’ as an example.

Tried&Refused Productions recently interviewed ‘Jigra’ actor Alia Bhatt along with Vedang Raina and filmmaker Vasan Bala. During the chat, Alia discussed the training she received to play the role of a Bihari migrant girl, Kumari Pinky in ‘Udta Punjab’. The actor said she spent a whole month perfecting her Bihari accent and the body language needed for the role. 

Alia shared, “Roles that have any sort of dialect or body language involved like 'Udta Punjab', I did a one-month prep for that. The Bihari dialect, the twang and I didn't speak much in the film so that one monologue also that I speak I actually rehearsed that for one month.”

Alia Bhatt Says Pankaj Tripathi Was Her Mentor

Notably, she said that Pankaj Tripathi, the seasoned actor who would later become famous, mentored her during the preparation of ‘Udta Punjab’. 

Alia Bhatt shared, “Not many people know this but Pankaj Tripathi was actually my mentor for that whole one month. This was before Pankaj Tripathi blew up. I got one month of just him every day giving me acting exercises and stuff. 

Speaking of her acting approach, she added, “When you talk about process, I just don't have a distinctive process. I actually prefer to just adapt to my director's process.”

About ‘Jigra’

Vedang Raina and Alia Bhatt star as a brother and sister in Jigra, a film directed by Vasan Bala. The film also stars Manoj Pahwa. Alia and Karan Johar's production companies, Eternals Sunshine and Dharma, are co-producing the picture. 'Jigra' is set to hit the cinemas on October 11.
