Who Is A Revanth Reddy? Telangana Congress President Who Turned The Party's Fortunes

A Revanth Reddy's intense on-ground campaigning for two years as the Telangana Congress president seems to have turned the fortunes in favour of the Congress, which suffered a massive defeat in 2018.

The latest trends of the Telangana election 2023 results show the Congress placed comfortably. The results can be attributed to the Telangana Congress president Anumula Revanth Reddy's intense campaigning for the party in the run-up. Having quickly risen through the party ranks since he joined Congress in 2017, Revanth Reddy changed the party's style of functioning leading to a great run for the Congress in the Telangana election 2023.

It wasn't easy leading the Congress in the southern state after a dismal show in 2018, when the party won just 7 seats. His style of functioning and campaigning has made him a favourite for the CM's post in case of a Congress win. But who is this dynamic leader who is seemingly changing the fortunes of Congress in Telangana?

  • The 54-year-old A Revanth Reddy, is a Lok Sabha MP for the Malkajgiri constituency in Telangana. He's also a two-time MLA — first in Andhra Pradesh in 2009 and then in Telangana in 2014.

  • Reddy had been a leader of the N Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party till 2017. He was handed the command of the Congress in Telangana in 2021 when the Congress was reeling under the 2018 defeat in the state.

  • One of the reasons that makes him a CM's post favourite is his "people's connect". After his appointment as the Congress president in 2021, he was increasingly seen working on the ground. He led several protests, concerning the BRS government's mismanagement, corruption, etc, against CM K Chandrashekhar Rao. His intense on-ground campaigning seems to have played a big role in turning the Congress's fortunes.

  • Reddy's appointment as the state Congress chief was met with resentment from several quarters due to his "autocratic" style of functioning. However, the top brass of the Congress backed Reddy due to his visibility and connect with local leaders.

  • Reddy's candidature from the Kamareddy seat against incumbent Chief Minister KCR was a clear indication of his elevated position within the party and the public.
