Earlier this month, the Party had released its list of candidates for 16 Lok Sabha seats in the state. The list included the name of Dimple Yadav, wife of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who will run for the Mainpuri seat.
The party's candidate list was released amid ongoing seat-sharing talks with Congress. The Samajwadi Party's first list includes 11 OBC candidates: one Muslim, one Dalit, one Thakur, one Tandon, and one Khatri. The eleven OBC candidates include four Kurmis, three Yadavs, two Shakyas, one Nishad, and one Pal.
The party led by Akhilesh Yadav has been in the news for some time, with many of its senior leaders resigning their positions. Salim Sherwani, a five-time former Badaun MP and ex-Union minister, resigned as national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party on Sunday, citing the party's "inappropriate" selection of Rajya Sabha candidates and neglect of the Muslim community and its issues.
Sherwani rejoined the Samajwadi Party in 2020, leaving the Congress behind. He is the fourth senior SP leader to resign or declare rebellion since Tuesday.
Swami Prasad Muarya resigned as national general secretary on Tuesday, citing the party's refusal to acknowledge his statements. Pallavi Patel, an SP MLA and Apna Dal (Kamerwadi) leader, announced the same day that she would not vote in the Rajya Sabha elections on February 27.
Dalit leader Kamla Kant Gautam resigned as SP state secretary on Friday, citing the position's insignificance and lack of accountability.
